History
The Augrabies Falls and farm originally belonged to my great grandfather. He bought it from the Queen in 1893 and sold it to the State in 1907. Today my children are the 5th generation on the farm.
Before the bridge to the Augrabies Falls was built in 1961, the Nel family played a big role in helping tourists through the river and acted as guides to tourists. Ben Nel, one of the six original Nel brothers, can especially be mentioned in this regard.
Lawrence Green writes in his book To the Rivers End, that in 1925 Bertus Nel (another of the Nel brothers) was the first person to see the Augrabies Falls in flood. Green argues that Bertus was a great swimmer and that the Khoi and San people could not swim well enough to get through all the tributaries when the river is in flood. Who knows, maybe Green has a point here. Jan van Riebeeck, however, was not the first person to stay in the Cape. |
