Accommodation
The Halfway House Hotel offers comfort, luxury and elegance in every bedroom. The contemporary rooms are spacious with opening windows.
Catch up on work at the desk, freshen up in the shower or relax in the bath. Each en en-suite bathroom has fresh towels and courtesy toiletries are supplied for your convenience. Some rooms have adjoining lounges available. Each bedroom is individually decorated to the highest standards and each room is equipped with air-conditioning / heating and ceiling fans, colour satellite television with remote control and DStv and coffee or tea making facilities. Wireless e-mail and Internet access are available. We also offer secure and safe covered parking on the property.
Standard Rooms (x8):
These rooms are elegantly decorated and offer a choice between two three-quarter beds or a double bed. The en-suite bathrooms are fitted with a shower, a claw foot slipper bathtub, basin and lavatory.
Deluxe Rooms (x2):
These deluxe rooms are larger in size than the standard rooms. They have a double bed and a spacious lounge area with couches to relax on and have en-suite bathrooms fitted with a shower, a clawfoot slipper bathtub, basin and lavatory.
Luxury Room (x1):
This room, is larger in size than the other rooms, when compared to the deluxe or standard rooms. It has a more spacious lounge area and en-suite bathroom with a jet bathtub. This grand styled suite has a luxuriously decorated lounge with plush sofas and armchairs. There are two bedrooms with closing doors. The main bedroom has a double bed while the second bedroom has two three-quarter beds in it. They each have a private entrance.
Breakfast and Dining
Annabell’s restaurant is a pleasant surprise; this fine dining eatery delivers great quality fare with all the trimmings. We strive to make dining out in Kimberley a pleasurable and memorable occasion. Annabell’s is known as much for its striking good looks as our mouthwatering good food and excellent service.
Our new restaurant has the same homely and relaxed atmosphere as hotel but in a more modern and chic environment. We have introduced a more glamorous and up market feel which sets it apart from The Half.
The restaurant’s interior features clean lines, beautiful linen and elegant décor. It has an incredibly cosy, warm and inviting atmosphere. Leather chairs and padded leather booths form part of the seating plan. We also have a more private enclosed area referred to as “The Kraal” for bigger parties. There’s also an upstairs dining area, with parasols on the balcony outside for those who prefer to have their meal out in the open.
Boasting an admirable wine collection, our selection comes with an impressive wine list. You’re bound to find a bottle to suit your tastes or you can choose to bring your own favourite along with you.
We purchase only the highest quality meats and our menu is prepared fresh everyday from local produce. A meal at Annabell’s wouldn’t be complete without treating oneself to its legendary desserts.
You can enjoy a scrumptious South African breakfast in our dining room at an additional cost and Annabell’s Fine Dining Restaurant is available for your convenience.

Attractions and Activities
• The Big Hole - view the largest man-made hole in the world, and delve into the history of the diamond rush
• Africana Library - opened in 1887, it contains rare books and a wealth of material on Africa, the Northern Cape and Kimberley. It is considered one of the best research libraries in South Africa
• Kamfersdam - this National Heritage site is a must for bird enthusiasts. It’s the home and breeding ground of the largest flocks of greater and lesser flamingos in the Southern Hemisphere. Viewing can be arranged – prior notice required
• Battlefields - the Kimberley area is rich in battlefields from the Anglo-Boer War (1899 - 1902). A trip to Magersfontein 30km from Kimberley is well worth a visit
• McGregor Museum - this museum offers everything from Archaeology to Zoology - as well as insight into the mining days of Kimberley. The building has a history of its own having been a hotel, a sanatorium, a convent and now a museum (within walking distance)
• Duggan Cronin Gallery - a photographic display unrivalled in South Africa depicting the indigenous people of South Africa through the 20th Century – right next door to the McGregor Museum (within walking distance)

History
"The Half" as it is popularly known, has and always will be a Kimberley institution and is now the only 'drive-in bar' in the world. Frequented by tens of thousands over the many years, the Half can boast some illustrious patrons from the early diamond rush days through to the modern post-democratic Kimberley of the early 21st Century.
‘The Half’ dates back to January 1872 when it was known as the Young America and advertised as “...an excellent framed house with bar stools and full stock...” It was sensibly positioned halfway on the main road between Dutoitspan and the New Rush mines, the latter of which became known as the Kimberley mine.
This is where the De Beers family started out their empire. This is where, within twelve months of the discovery of diamonds at Colesberg Kopje in 1871, 50 000 fortune hunters crowded into the first little shantytown of New Rush that later became known as Kimberley. You will no longer find the Kopje here, instead you will find the biggest man made hole ever dug with pick and shovel. |
