DESCRIPTION:

The garden at Mieliefontein Karoo Guestfarm is an attraction on its own. Amongst the best in the Karoo, the garden covers a considerable piece of land. Features like walkways, a natural spring, ponds and an olive grove makes it an oasis in the desert. Elma grows her own vegetables which she uses in her meals. All vegetables growing underground like carrots, onions and beetroot do well in the Karoo.

Accommodation


Mieliefontein has a big and well built house with 8 bedrooms and sleeps 17 guests. The guesthouse has a four star grading. Rooms are well decorated with antique wooden pieces and family pictures. Most of the rooms look out on the garden.

Dining


Elma use all this natural and organic products is her unique meals. The three course dinners are an experience of tastes and something you won’t forget. The dining room is on the second floor overlooking the Seekoei River plains were timely breakfasts are enjoyed. It is at Mieliefontein where the basic preparation of the organic meat for the excellent meals at the guesthouses is done by Elma. Karoo lamb and venison is very popular and healthy.

The Farm


Mieliefontein is the basis of the agricultural activities on the conservancy. It is a working farm where sheep, cattle and horses are the main concern. Merino sheep are bred for wool production and dorpers for the meat. Cattle are mainly kept for a good milk supply to the guesthouses and home made butter is also a product. Horses are used to patrol the conservancy and the 12 mares form part of an endurance horse stud, while foals are bred for a market in Dubai.

Location


Travel agents use Mieliefontein as a basis to launch mid Karoo day tours from. Its locations make visits to Graaff Reinet, Hanover and the two biggest South African dams; Gariep Dam and van der Kloof.

Mieliefontein has more than 200 bird species. The hippo pool is 20 km down stream and an easy drive for a spectacular sunset. Mieliefontein is 8 km off the N1, 20 km North of Hanover and 55 km South of Colesberg. Also accessible from the R389 - 16 km of the N1.
